Us Brits are spoiled when it comes to golf. We have more world class golf courses per square mile than anywhere else in the world. Some of you may be thinking there is little point in heading over to France to put a little white ball into a hole. In this article, I will outline some of the reasons more and more of us are doing just this.
Crowd-free Courses
This is the main reason this author heads over to France time and time again. The average French person, it seems, are yet to discover the joys of golf and as a result, you will very rarely find yourself sandwiched in-between an elderly four-ball in front and a couple of young pros behind. Playing without feeling rushed or held back adds to the experience greatly.
The quieter times are actually when you would expect it to be busiest. France shuts down around lunch time where the French take time off from their days to relax and enjoy a long lunch. This is the perfect opportunity to get on the first tee and have the course to yourself.
Cheaper Green Fees
On average, green fees in France are ~25% cheaper than their UK counterparts. If you play alot of rounds while you are away, this can add up to quite a large sum. Maybe even enough to replace those balls you cannoned into the lake. Though, maybe not.
Good Food and Drink
Everyone, everywhere in the world knows about the skill of the French in the kitchen so why not enjoy a few days on the course while indulging in the French cuisine. Whether it’s a baguette and bottle of wine to take round the course or an après golf sit down in a restaurant with 28 of the local beers.
Get international contacts
It is no mystery that golf is a business man’s game. This is common throughout the world and golf is a great way to network. The French golf courses attract not only the French and Brits, but you will see large numbers of Belgians, Dutch, Germans, Italians, as well as golfers from further afield such as the USA and Australia. Just remember to bring the business cards!
Even the wife will have a good time
Forgot the anniversary? Then why not take the wife across for a “romantic weekend away”. The perfect disguise for a golf trip. Disappear for a round and come back with a baguette under your arm and she will be none the wiser and probably thank you for getting fresh bread.
