While there’s no argument that Spain and Portugal are two of Europe’s top golf holiday destinations, there’s plenty of passionate discussion about whether it’s best to head for the Costa del Sol or the Algarve. When it comes to climate, you can take your pick between the Spanish destination’s average of 300 days a year of sunshine, or the cooler, Atlantic-influenced weather of the Algarve, with a similar amount of sunny days.
As far as accessibility goes, both Costa del Sol and the Algarve have transportation infrastructure geared to tourists, and a range of hotels, restaurants, and nightlife that ensures that your time off the greens will be well catered for. But when it comes to choosing a golfing holiday, you’ll want to compare the golf course options to help you decide which destination suits you best.

The Lisbon Coast, in central Portugal, is one of the country’s three main golfing regions. As with golfing in the other Portuguese golf regions - Algarve and the island of Madeira - a round on one of the fine old Lisbon courses, such as the prestigious Estoril, is a quite a unique experience. And the city’s superb shopping, charming architecture and fascinating museums provide a superb sightseeing opportunity, as well as the chance to experience the delicious local cuisine at some of Portugal’s top restaurants.
But you should be aware, that when you take into account Lisbon’s vibrant nightlife, and entertainment scene, the Portuguese capital may not be a quieter alternative to the Algarve. Checking out the cafés of Chiado, before dining in the Bairro Alto quarter will take up most of your spare time after hours. They are the epicentre of the city’s bar scene and where most of the night time action takes place. And on off days, you can explore the small coastal fishing villages, hike in the mountain forests, or visit vineyards.

The TPC of Scottsdale, Stadium Course is a fun, interesting layout set in the desert about 30 minutes north of the Phoenix Sky Harbor airport. The course was originally constructed to be the new home of the FBR Open (nee Phoenix Open) a professional golf tournament that is a regular stop on the PGA tour. The course is part of a larger golf facility that also includes the Champions Course, another 18-hole layout that is situated across the street.
The clubhouse is first rate, and includes many of the amenities that are typically found only at private clubs, including an expansive locker room with an attendant who is available to change spikes or shine shoes. A huge pro-shop carries just about any type of equipment or clothing that you could need. The Practice Facilities at the TPC of Scottsdale are world class, and include multiple putting greens, a generous short game practice area, and a huge driving range with actual greens for targets (not just flag sticks). It is not uncommon to see professional tour players out practicing on the range. Forecaddies can be hired on a round by round basis, and provide local knowledge of the course including helping your group to read greens and locate errant shots.

Some historians trace the sport of golf back to the Roman game of paganica, in which participants used a bent stick to hit a stuffed leather ball; however, according to the most widely accepted account, the modern game originated in Scotland around the 12th century with shepherds knocking stones into rabbit holes on the current site of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews. The actual sport became officially recognized in 1754 when the Scots formed the organization known as the Society of St Andrews Golfers.
Since then, the game has grown in popularity to the point where there are currently more than 32,000 courses worldwide, of which approximately 17,000 are in the United States. Golf is now rapidly gaining popularity in the newly developing countries like China where there are currently less than 300 courses, however hundreds more are under contract; either in the design phase or under construction.
