The first time when you drive across the border to Trijuana from San Diego, you may face few jarring experiences on your way. There is spotty signage. The roads appear too rough for a ride. Drivers seldom care to stay in lanes and so are pedestrians.

As you move out of the city towards the coast, you will see the ocean again and you’re just 15 minutes from here to Real Del Mar. It is a classic resort, has a Marriott hotel, tennis courts, swimming pool, good restaurant, spa and an excellent golf course. Here holes have been laid out in series of canyons. One can get ample views of the canyon walls, valleys, and ocean.

Accuracy of a player is tested starting from the first tee. As the fairways get narrower and canyon walls more steep, this examination continues. Many fairways are wide and few are extremely claustrophobic. The good example of this is 13th hole which has been named “double trouble” and is first of three par 5s on back nine. The left side is line by creek and canyon wall runs straight to the right. The hole is 587 yard from the tip while playing uphill.

It could be really stressful for some golfers to navigate these tight chutes and usually proves costly to them as they lose lots of balls! Many however enjoy the challenge which Real Del Mar throws.

Few other standout holes are No. 6, a par 4 which plays downhill, and gives you a good view as your ball moves against the Coronado Islands backdrop. The no. 9 also called “isles of Coronado” is easily reachable par 5.

No. 14 is good par 3 and measures around 180, but seems a bit longer. The hole No. 16 is really a good risk reward offer, which has ample water in the play, but is not at all visible from the tee box. Quite oddly, the course just ends with a 131 yard par 3.

The Verdict

The course is really enjoyable and features good views and a relaxing environment. It has an excellent pace of play on all weekdays. Its narrow fairways can pose problem at times, but if you are in best form then it won’t really be a problem.

You can easily find the resort and it has a really fine service. The maintenance of the course is good and morning rates on the prime weekends are above $69.

The usual rates from Monday to Thursday are $59 with the $35 as twilight charges from Monday to Thursday and $40 from Friday to Sunday. The Seniors (above 55) get good discounts too.
