Whether you’re a novice or a seasoned pro, the Scottish regions of Ayrshire, Dumfries and Galloway could be the perfect place to take a golfing break.

Just north of the border, there are more than 30 courses for you to choose from depending on your interests, skills and ability.

If you’re up for the challenge of two championship courses, Turnberry in Ayrshire is a great place to begin your golfing holiday. Boasting scenic coastal views of Aisla Craig, the Irish Sea and the Isle of Arran, Turnberry offers you the choice of two championship courses - Aisla and Kintyre.

But if you’re after something a bit more low-key at Turnberry - or simply want to hone your golfing skills - you can also choose to play the shorter Arran course, which only has nine holes. Alternatively, why not practice with a pro at the Colin Montgomerie Golf Academy?

In Dumfriesshire, the Thornhill Golf Club is sure to appeal to nature lovers. Nestled in the Southern Uplands, the 6,085-yard course offers a rewarding challenge in stunning scenery.

Those who are new to the game but still want the experience of playing a round of golf in lovely surroundings could head to the Hoddom Castle Golf Club on the banks of the River Annan. The beginner-friendly course is surrounded by trees and is located close to Ecclefechan.

Another nine-hole course to consider is Castle Douglas, which was re-designed in 2006 and is set in a pretty parkland area. It’s great for those who are after a bit of a challenge but don’t fancy a full 18-hole game - and visitors old and new are welcome!

Spring, summer and early autumn are the best times to take a golf break in Scotland as the weather is likely to be better - and you may want to enquire about a Gateway to Golf offer if you’re visiting Dumfries and Galloway between April and October.

These passes can be purchased as either a six-round or three-round package and let you play on a number of courses in the region over a period of five consecutive days - although it may be wise to book your tee times in advance.

No matter if you’re new to the game or can play like the pros, you are sure to find your perfect golfing break in Ayrshire, Dumfries and Galloway.
