Britain is well known for its beautiful countryside, the whole length and breadth of the British Isles has rolling hills, towering mountain ranges and wonderfully lush forests. It’s no wonder that many people enjoy fell walking and mountaineering with so much natural beauty right on our doorstep or at the very least a short drive out of town.
For golfers this countryside is the perfect backdrop for many of their favourite 18 holes around the country, and with the variable weather and locations they are spoilt for choice when it comes to a challenging game of golf.
Here are five resorts that can boast a world class golf course as part of their considerable list of features:
DeVere Wychwood, Weston
DeVere hotels have many hotels and golf resorts around the country at Daventry, Reading and Weston. Weston’s resort near Crewe though has recently benefitted from a £250,000 renovation project for its conference centre and has a European PGA tour certified course in the surrounding grounds. You can arrange for tuition on the course if you so choose or simply book yourself in for a round or two over the weekend.
Foxhills, Surrey
Foxhills is a very short distance away from Heathrow airport so they often get many foreign visitors itching to play a round of golf frequenting their courses. Foxhills actually comprises of three courses, one of which is named after the 10-time Ryder cup winner Bernard Hunt. As well as the Bernard Hunt course there is the Longcross course, whose 14th hole was recently voted as one of the best holes ever played by Radio 5 Listeners. The third course is a 9 hole par 3 course for working on your short game.
Blarney Golf Resort, Cork
The Blarney Golf Resort includes a course co-designed by fan favourite golfer, John Daly. Daly who favours the big tee shot clearly left his mark on the designs with one par 5 hole measuring 601 yards! Nestled in the Shournagh Valley in Cork the Blarney Golf resort provides not only the necessary challenge but also the desired surroundings any golfer would feel at home with.
The Gleneagles Hotel, Perthshire
The name Gleneagles should be familiar with any golfer, mainly due to the three world class courses: The PGA centenary, King’s Course and Queen’s Course. The PGA centenary course designed by golfing legend Jack Nicklaus will be playing host to the 2014 Ryder Cup matches and so now would be a great time to take a trip to test out the course before the pros get there.
The Celtic Manor, Newport, South Wales
For those looking for a newer course the 2010 Ryder Cup will be played at The Celtic Manor in Newport. As well as the designated tournament course there are also the Roman Road and the Montgomerie, designed by the Ryder Cup captain of the same name, Colin Montgomerie.
