As a hotelier, this article will be a little different from most that I write. Today, I will be discussing the option of planning your corporate retreat in a luxury condominium resort.

Having spent over thirty years in hotels, I normally think of conventions and meetings being held in hotels or large convention halls for City Wide Conventions where housing is at the surrounding hotels.

However, I recently wrote about having a very small corporate retreat in a cabin, in the mountains. For extremely small groups, cabins works fine. Read the rest of this entry »

I grew up in a resort town, you know, the kind of town you love to visit but you don’t really think anybody actually lives there. It was beautiful and quiet and famous people lived there. We would see Chuck Magione at the grocery store, he was a famous trumpet player in his day. When I was a teen I was in love with Lee Major’s and as luck would have it he filmed the “Six Million Dollar Man” in our town regularly. “The Six Million Dollar Woman” was regularly filmed in our little town, my mom would let me miss school when Lee was in town. We would sit up on the hill and watch them film, those were great days. He was very short so when he was walking along side Lindsey Wagner she would have to walk in the gutter and he would be up on the curb. Our town was quaint and had very unique and beautiful architecture, especially the down town area. Read the rest of this entry »

It is 1999 and we are guests at Celtic Manor in Coldra Woods, Newport, Gwent Wales. We stand on a rise adjacent to the golf course. While the dream of hosting the Ryder Cup is taking shape all around us, we are surveying the past. Below us is Caerleon, once a thriving outpost the Romans called Isca. Several valleys beyond the mist-shrouded hillocks alongside the River Wye, directly to our east, lie the storied remains of Chepstow Castle and Tintern Abbey.

Magpies, their black and white feathers dappled by sun rays streaking through low scudding clouds, swoop from their pine tree perches. Haughtily, they strut across the precise, perfect lawn casting wry glances at a trio of men huddled nearby. One takes a decisive shot, unruffled by the chattering birds, following the ball with his eyes as it soars over the lake and well bunkered green to a prime landing site within easy range of the targeted hole. First, you need to consider your travel mates, will the trip be made alone, with a partner, with a group or with your family. Next consider whether you prefer to do all the research and make reservations by yourself. Alternatively, you may prefer to hand the entire job over to either a family member, your partner, someone in the group or a travel agent. You will need to consider these factors and make a firm decision on your course of action.

Personal trips mean budget considerations; will you and your partner stay at a Bed and Breakfast and stroll down to the local golf course to play or will you choose a golf resort vacation? Resorts do not come cheap but with some time and effort invested in research you can find some really good deals from the smaller, not so famous resorts. Usually if the golf course is absolutely super, you will have problems with rooms or food; you have to decide what is really important to you when choosing your golf resort vacation. Remember the song Anticipation by Carly Simon? I heard it the other day on satellite radio on the Music from the 70’s station and it got me thinking about the power of anticipation! Think about it yourself. What do you eagerly anticipate? Is it that special dinner, the Saturday round of golf, the weekend getaway trip, or the day off just to relax? Well, regardless of what it is, it is looked forward to and keeps you going! So ask yourself this. Are you creating Anticipation in your club or resort offerings? Are you keeping it fresh and regularly trying new things? Do you brainstorm with your staff for new ideas? Are you willing to step out of the box? Are your events really special or just called special because that’s what you have always called them. Read the rest of this entry »
