There are 19 courses in the Marbella area, and thirty more are within an hour’s drive. For practical purposes, the greater Marbella area can be divided in three locations comprising a total of nineteen courses: Marbella east, central Marbella, and the 64 square-mile area west of Marbella including Nueva Andalucía, San Pedro and Benahavís.
The seven-mile stretch of coast known as Marbella East features a number of luxury residential complexes sufficiently remote from the town centre to foster a quieter and less crowded lifestyle. This additional breathing room has made possible-and to an extent results from-the existence of five courses in the area. From east to west, these are: Cabopino Golf, Santa María Golf and Country Club, Marbella Golf and Country Club, Santa Clara Golf, and Golf Río Real. Situated between the N340 national coastal road and the higher Autopista del Sol motorway, these courses provide gentle slopes toward the sea, and correspondingly generous sea views. Golfing holidays in Spain - the very phrase evokes a delightful image of long green fairways under a warm sun. Golf may have been invented in cold, misty Scotland but it’s best enjoyed under sunny blue skies. And where better than in Spain? Not only does Spain promise year-round sunshine, it’s also home to some of the country’s - indeed Europe’s - best golf courses.
So where are the best golf courses to be found? The fact is you can find golf courses all over Spain. Many are in the tourist haunts of the Costa del Sol and the Algarve. Like so many places on the tourist trail, they tend to be crowded, poor value and lacking in the charm you’ll find in other parts of the country. Read the rest of this entry »

Lanzarote is a golfer’s paradise. Imagine sunny days, 70 degrees, a slight breeze, almost every single day. That is the beauty that is Lanzarote. Never heard of it? It’s one of the Canary Islands, off the coast of Africa. People often think that the islands are named after the birds, but in truth it comes from the Latin for dog — Canine. Probably the sailors were trying to describe the seals that used the islands as a mating ground. Those seals, are, alas, extinct.

Hit the green
As if you didn’t already know it, when you leave Malaga airport great banners proclaim ‘Costa del Sol - Costa del Golf’ - and true enough, you can take your pick of manicured fairways distributed along the length of this sun-drenched strip. But two luxury golf hotels share the Marbella Club Golf Resort, situated 20 minutes scenic drive inland at Benahavis. The resort is so stunning, peaceful and private that you won’t mind the trip.
Marbella Club: Back in 1946 one of the Costa’s most prestigious golf hotels was still the Finca Santa Margarita and the private residence of Prince Alfonso von Hohenlohe, whose own vision of luxury was “a blend of privacy and gardens”. Guests of the exclusive Marbella Club Hotel enjoy the fruits of his labours in the lush, sub-tropical gardens that are a riot of bird-song, exquisite flowers and exotic trees.

While there’s no argument that Spain and Portugal are two of Europe’s top golf holiday destinations, there’s plenty of passionate discussion about whether it’s best to head for the Costa del Sol or the Algarve. When it comes to climate, you can take your pick between the Spanish destination’s average of 300 days a year of sunshine, or the cooler, Atlantic-influenced weather of the Algarve, with a similar amount of sunny days.
As far as accessibility goes, both Costa del Sol and the Algarve have transportation infrastructure geared to tourists, and a range of hotels, restaurants, and nightlife that ensures that your time off the greens will be well catered for. But when it comes to choosing a golfing holiday, you’ll want to compare the golf course options to help you decide which destination suits you best.
